Named after the first Mayor of St. Paul, Olmsted County was established on February 20th, 1855. As a frequent stopping point for wagons traveling into southeastern Minnesota, Olmsted County grew rather rapidly. During the Civil War, Dr. William Worrall Mayo arrived in the county to examine draftees, and remained after the war ended. In 1883 a tornado hit the county – Rochester specifically – and prompted the construction of a Hospital by Sister Mary Alfred. Mayo and his sons staffed the hospital, and from there it grew into the world-renowned medical establishment that it is today. Because of the county’s thriving medical industry, it has been a strong economic center. Today, Olmsted County is home to around 150,000 residents and is a medical destination for political figures, royalty, and the world’s elite.
